Drywall Experience

Today, I am grateful to be a second generation drywall contractor. Over half my life I have been learning and perfecting this handed down skill. I'll be 30 years old in December (2008) and have 18 years of drywall experience. If you do the math, that puts me at the age of 12 when I started in the drywall trade. I was taught drywall by my step dad but I also have an uncle, two brothers, cousins, and about 6-7 friends from school in drywall that I use to work with. Most are still doing drywall as their profession.

Work History

90% of the installs I have completed was done for Sidesinger & Associates, Inc. as a sub-contractor. Under them I have done work for many different building contractors and home owners over the years. The other 10% of work was for either Anthony's Drywall, Gibboney Enterprises, or the builders themselves. The majority of the work was residential. However, I have installed drywall on a few commercial jobs, including large scale government school projects. I enjoy working residential jobs far more than commercial.

Quality Driven

Professional Drywall Contractors from Pennsylvania (which is where Brody Kline, owner of South Virginia Drywall is from) are subject to drywall inspections. All jobs must be completely hung and then the inspector comes in to well, inspect. When it passes you may then start to finish the construction project. What does the inspector look for? He does his best to make sure glue was used. If he knows you and your work they may simply trust you used glue or they will look for discarded glue tubes and even pound on the walls to see if they rattle. If they rattle guess what, no glue. You can put 3 screws in the field and the drywall can still rattle, if there is no glue. He checks the screw pattern. What is the code in PA call for? In the ceilings 2 in the field and 1 in the field of the walls, and as long as it is glued correctly that is plenty. Which means it does not rattle. He looks for any large gaps. A drywall hang job completed by a professional contractor should have NO gaps bigger than half an inch, and to be honest with you that is pushing it, a quarter inch is the standard for good drywall installers. As far as the inspectors standards for gaps are, I’m not sure. Lastly, they look for Fire Rated Board and Moisture & Mold Resistant board to be used in certain areas. The garage must have 5/8 thick drywall protecting all living area of the house. All bathrooms must be completely hung in XP board (Mold and Mildew Resistant board). In closing: South Virginia Drywall has 19 years of drywall experience from Pennsylvania. Brody is used to providing his customers with the best possibly drywall construction!

Does it cost more to use different sized sheetrock?
There are two ways people think it costs more but those reasons are just misunderstandings.  Builders and home owners that do not use all size sheetrock usually believe that the labor cost is more, along with the materials cost.  I will cover both misunderstandings below.
